Gifts of the Magi

Posted by Pastor Frank Humphrey on

The Magi brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to the new born Messiah. Early Christians saw deep significance in this.

Gold reminded them of a king's crown. Jesus Christ is truly the King of kings. Pilate wrote better than he knew when he inscribed the placard on Jesus' cross with the words, 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews'. He wrote in Hebrew, Greek and Latin. The initials for the Latin are INRI. These letters are inscribed on many Roman Catholic Churches.

Frankincense was used in the Jerusalem temple in the worship of God. It reminds us that Christ is God and man at the same time.

Myrrh was an expensive ointment from India and often used in burial. It reminds us that Christ died for our sins and rose again from the dead the third day that we might be saved and become children of God.
