Mark 10:45 - For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
These words of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ are the heart and soul of the gospel of salvation. Our Lord lived a life of service to the point where he died for our sins on the cross. He calls himself the Son of Man; a reference to the prophecy of the Messiah in Daniel Ch.7. It also refers to his human nature as Son of God refers to his God nature.
Ransom is something given to free people from captivity. We are all captive to sin and death and the judgement of God. So the Judge of the universe stepped down from his throne and died in our place as our substitute. Because he is man, he could die. Because he is God he could pay for all humanity, and rise again. All we have to do is welcome him into our lives as our Lord and Saviour and then we have eternal life and a personal relationship with God.
